Morning and evening sunlight shape Eventide Coffee, a 3,000-square-foot cafe near the sea in Chennai, India, where a curving central counter, skylight and coastal palette are designed to create a sense of calm.
Abundant eastern light, uninterrupted views and the constant presence of the sea helped guide the response to the site, climate and surrounding neighborhood, according to Chennai-based architecture and design firm Billboards.
“From the beginning, the brief was never about creating a statement cafe,” the architects said in a project description shared with DCN. “It was about facilitating calm, something that felt natural to the place and its people.”
The scale of the site allowed for restraint, according to Billboards. Early conversations focused on the needs of nearby residents and the creation of a calm, unforced space.
“We wanted the space to belong as much to the neighborhood as it did to the brand,” the architects said.
Billboards sought to extend the design beyond what might ordinarily be expected of a food-and-beverage space, while noting that “the beach already had everything we needed.”
“The design approach was distilled into three guiding aspects: sensory touch, volume, and color,” Billboards said. “Inspired directly by the Madras beach, the palette and identity of the cafe draw from the coast itself, lending both color and name to the brand.”
The exterior facade takes the form of a rectangular vessel with a large glass opening that provides views into the curved interior elements, including the bar counter and the curvilinear wall behind it. The highlight of the space is the coffee bar that expands outward to anchor the interior and create a stage-like setting.
Rather than dividing the cafe into rigid zones, the interior encourages intuitive movement through the space. Billboards provided what it described as a full-stack design service encompassing the architecture, branding and packaging. The expanded scope allowed the firm to apply the same narrative across the physical space and brand identity.
A slow bar and pourover station occupies one end of the counter, with dedicated seating that draws customers around it.
Materials were chosen to reinforce the coastal narrative. “The textured wall surfaces and muted colors derive from earthy tones that gradually transition into lighter, beach-like shades showing a sense of weathering,” the firm said.
Light remains the dominant element throughout the day. The site receives eastern and western light, while a series of evenly spaced, low-hanging beams animates the ceiling plane from sunrise to sunset, the firm said.
Beneath the beams, a 16-seat community table is intended for events, workshops and co-working. At the center of the space, the skylight captures softer evening light and diffuses it through the curved form toward the counter below. A circular opening near the counter balances the surrounding geometry and frames staff movement.
Lounge-style sofas comprise the main seating area beneath a sloped ceiling curve that softens the interior geometry.
The overall volume of the cafe reaches 22 feet. Rather than emphasizing that height uniformly, the design uses rising and descending ceiling planes to guide movement through smaller spaces.
“Eventide Coffee ultimately presents itself as a measured architectural response, one that prioritizes atmosphere over assertion,” Billboards said. “Rooted in its coastal context and shaped by light, material, and ritual, the cafe offers a quiet, immersive experience that unfolds gently over time.”
